FAQs
Whether you're a professional installer or a DIY enthusiast, we want to make sure you have everything you need to successfully install and maintain your Tri Star engine or component. Below you’ll find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions, along with key technical guidance.
Installation Guidelines
Do I need a certified mechanic to install a TRI STAR engine?
We strongly recommend installation by an ASE-certified technician. Proper installation is required to validate your warranty and ensure optimal engine performance.
What else should I replace during installation?
At minimum, we recommend replacing:
- Thermostat and water pump
- Spark plugs and wires
- Oil cooler and radiator (if contamination is present)
- Timing components (if not already included)
- All filters and fluids per OEM spec
How do I prime the oil system before startup?
Refer to your engine’s specific break-in procedure. Most engines require manual oil priming before cranking to prevent dry-start damage.
Break-In & Maintenance
What’s the proper break-in procedure?
- First oil change at 500 miles
- Avoid heavy loads or towing for the first 1,000 miles
- Use conventional oil for the break-in period (no synthetic)
- Vary RPMs but avoid redlining
What oil should I use after break-in?
Follow OEM viscosity specs. After break-in, high-quality synthetic oils are acceptable unless otherwise specified.
What happens if I don’t follow the break-in process?
Failure to follow proper break-in and maintenance may void your warranty. Improper break-in can cause excessive wear or early failure.

Is my engine covered under warranty?
Yes. Most TRI STAR engines come with a 3-year/unlimited mileage limited warranty (unless stated otherwise). Be sure to retain all receipts and service records.
